BIOPOLIS 2025-40
Position:
Research Technician
Scientific
Area: Biological Sciences (ecology and conservation)
Association
BIOPOLIS (CIBIO) is opening a call for one Field Technician in the framework of the Invited
Research Chair in Hunting and Biodiversity (CCB; Cátedra Caça e
Biodiversidade ) .
CCB is a collaborative project funded through a consortia of private entities
and the Foundation of Science and Technology of Portuguese Government, that
aims to deepen scientific knowledge on the biology, ecology, genetics, and
health status of game species, particularly the red-legged partridge, the Iberian
rabbit, and the Iberian hare, thereby contributing to informed, integrated, and
sustainable population management, while also promoting the value of natural
resources and hunting management as a driver of biodiversity and ecosystem
services. The study area is in Portugal, comprising mostly the southern region and
centred in Mértola. The selected candidate will develop work in wildlife
ecology, population monitoring and disease surveillance, carrying out tasks
related to the organization and implementation of field sampling to evaluate game
species distribution and abundance, biodiversity inventories through camara-traps,
acoustic devices and environmental DNA (eDNA) samples. The work will also
include the process and analysis of collected data, and the production of technical
reports.
The
contracting institution, Association BIOPOLIS, is a private, non-profit
organization that was created in the scope of the project "BIOPOLIS - Teaming
to Upgrade Excellence in Environmental Biology, Ecosystem Research, and
AgroBiodiversity” (2019-2027), with direct EC funding of 15 M€ and a similar
amount by CCDR Norte. BIOPOLIS aims to support the upgrade of the research unit
CIBIO – Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources to a Centre of
Excellence in Environmental Biology, Ecosystem Research, and AgroBiodiversity,
through a teaming with a leading scientific institution, the University of
Montpellier (France), and with the participation of a business partner, the
Porto Business School (PBS – University of Porto, Portugal). CIBIO conducts
world-class research in biodiversity and evolution, hosting more than 30
research groups, including nearly 200 researchers and over 100 MSc and PhD
students worldwide. Association BIOPOLIS is an inclusive, equal-opportunity
employer, offering attractive conditions and benefits.
1.
ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES:

ability to speak and write Portuguese, with an MSc in Biology, Ecology, Veterinary,
Biological Conservation, or any related fields, who will be integrated into CCB´s
team. It is recommendable to have: i) previous field experience in applying methods to evaluate wild vertebrates’
distribution and abundance, including managing geographic information
system software, such as QGIS, ii)
experience with collection of biological samples from wildlife and their
environment iii) driving license, and experience in off-road driving
conditions; iv) speak and write in Portuguese and English fluently; v)
available to start work on 1st October. It will be also valued: i) previous
experience with methods to evaluate distribution and abundance of rabbit, partridge
and/or hares; ii) a solid background in wildlife ecology, conservation and
management; iii) experience in designing and implementing monitoring surveys for
biodiversity, namely camara-traps, acoustic devices or eDNA sampling; iv)
previous experience in analysing distribution and abundance data and writing technical
reports.
Candidates
should have a good publication record in this area (either scientific or technical)
and must have characteristics such as ease of working in a team, ability to

Fieldwork will be conducted mostly in southern Portugal
and the work plan will comprise the following tasks:
1.
Participation in sampling design and content
development in a GIS environment;
2.
Fieldwork to evaluate game species distribution and
abundance using different monitoring techniques, such as countings through
distance sampling, camara-traps, acoustic devices and eDNA sampling;
3.
Fieldwork to conduct disease surveillance through
biological sample collection in hunted animals (active surveillance) and
animals found dead in the field (passive surveillance.
4.
Analyse collected data (using R, QGIS and other
