Description
DRW is a diversified trading firm headquartered in Chicago that operates across multiple asset classes and markets globally. As a Systems Software Engineer on the Network Capture Services team, you will design, build, deploy, and operate the firm's mission-critical network packet capture platform, combining software development (C++, Python, Rust, Ruby) with systems infrastructure work including server deployment, automation, and data center coordination.
What You'll Do
• Design, build, deploy, and validate network capture servers, driving work to completion across all involved teams
• Develop and maintain capture and query software in C++, Python, Rust, and Ruby with focus on testing, reliability, and performance
• Build Ansible automation, configuration management, and deployment tooling for repeatable capture server provisioning
• Participate in weekly production support rotation: troubleshooting live issues, coordinating incident response, and proactive monitoring
• Improve automation, monitoring, and capacity planning; serve as liaison between Network Capture Services and infrastructure teams
What You Need
• 3+ years of professional systems software engineering experience
• Strong skills in a systems language (Rust, C/C++, or Go) with willingness to make C++ your primary language
• Experience with DPDK or comparable kernel-bypass packet processing (hugepages, CPU pinning, NUMA awareness, poll-mode drivers)
• Strong Linux skills including administration and troubleshooting of production servers
• Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, switching, NICs, packet analysis)
• Hands-on experience with server hardware and data center workflows (specifying builds, remote hands, rack/cabling, firmware, BIOS, out-of-band management)
• Experience with Ansible or comparable configuration management tool
• Comfort coordinating work across infrastructure teams and strong follow-through capability
• Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and package management
• Strong scripting skills in Bash, Python, Ruby, or similar
• Habit of working on systems with constant focus on testing, reliability, scalability, and maintainability
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Availability for weekly production support rotation including off-hours, nights, weekends, and ability to handle high-pressure situations
Nice to Have
• Ruby and Rust experience
• RHEL-family Linux experience or background as a Linux administrator or network engineer
• Kubernetes and GitOps tooling such as Flux or Helm
• Commercial network capture products experience
• Performance analysis tooling experience (perf, eBPF, flamegraphs, tcpdump)
• Contributions to the DPDK ecosystem
• Service discovery, secrets management, metrics and dashboarding, and relational databases familiarity
Annual base salary $145,000–$185,000 depending on experience, qualifications, and skill set; eligible for annual discretionary bonus; comprehensive benefits including group medical, pharmacy, dental and vision insurance, 401k with discretionary employer match, short and long-term disability, life and AD&D insurance, health savings accounts, and flexible spending accounts
