Job Description Department: Steam Plant - JM Pay Rate Type: Hourly Employee Type: Job Summary: This is an on-call, as required position without benefits. The position requires the ability to operate high pressure boilers, turbine generator, and auxiliary equipment. All employees are responsible for providing a comfortable environment for other Colby College residents and staff. This position reports to the Engineer in charge of the Central Steam Plant. QUALIFICATIONS: • High school diploma or equivalent required. • A Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operators license required. • Mechanical ability to operate, maintain, and service of the mechanical equipment and systems used in high pressure steam plants. • Ability to operate and maintain Biomass and Natural Gas Boilers and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Perform all work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning and thoughtfulness. • Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a neat and clean condition. • Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community. • To notify and / or obtain advice from the Engineer in Charge or call for assistance as may be appropriate in any situation. • Test condition of the boiler water as directed. • Read and record steam plant data hourly. • Monitor, record, and control opacity emissions in accordance with Colby directives and the State of Maine DEP and federal regulations. • Operate, change, and clean burners. • Operate soot blowers. • Perform routine preventive maintenance and other repairs as directed. • Perform all other task, and duties as directed by the Engineer in Charge PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: General indoor and outdoor campus environment. Duties require that employees interact with students, faculty and staff. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Position involves some sitting, though frequent movement is necessary. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and considerable lifting is often required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand wrist motion is also necessary. Ability to enter confined spaces per Colby safety polices. STANDARDS: Employee will be required to dress and conduct themselves appropriately in accordance with Colby College polices.
