Job Type: Full-time, temporary contract assignment; reports to the Director of Finance Location: Towson, MD 21204 Hours: Full-time schedule; occasional overtime if necessary Onsite Requirements: This role is on-site Position Summary : The Staff Accountant is primarily responsible for preparing and processing payroll for headquarters and designated international staff. This role also supports financial operations by managing payroll, accounts payable, and related accounting processes while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely transactions. This position also serves as backup for the Program Accountant. Responsibilities and Essential Functions: • Payroll Processing and Benefit Administration: Prepares and accurately inputs semi-monthly payroll data; coordinates with the payroll vendor and Human Resources; initiates new employee data in the payroll system; maintains payroll documentation; prepares monthly allocations, quarterly reconciliations, annual W-2 reviews, taxable benefit tracking, salary wires for international staff, and supporting schedules as assigned. • Accounts Payable: Processes and pays invoices in accordance with established policies and procedures; prepares annual 1099s and quarterly reconciliations; prepares bank/vendor wires, EFT, and ACH payments as needed; monitors and responds to the Finance inbox. • Credit Card and Expense Management: Acts as backup for processing credit card transactions and reconciliations in accordance with policy and assigned deadlines. • Documentation: Maintains and updates procedures related to assigned tasks, financial filing, vendor invoice records, and supporting documentation. • Training: Cross-trains with accounting team members on daily responsibilities as assigned and supports onboarding staff on finance-related processes and tools. • Journal Entries: Supports the preparation of journal entries for month-end and related tasks as needed. • Audits: Completes assigned tasks related to annual and field audits. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Software Applications: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel; familiarity with SharePoint is a plus; knowledge of accounting and payroll systems preferred. • Communication: Advanced verbal, listening, and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with diverse cultures and explain expected policies and procedures. • Organization, Planning, and Multi-tasking: Strong organizational and planning skills; ability to set priorities, meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, multi-task with minimal supervision, and remain detail-oriented. • Self-Management and Teamwork: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, complete tasks thoroughly, work well as part of a team, and maintain a positive attitude. • Confidentiality: Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and a high degree of professionalism. Required Education and Experience : • BA degree in Accounting or a related field required. • Payroll and accounts payable experience required. • Non-profit experience preferred.
