Description
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an all-rounded Sole Gardener to take responsibility for the care and continued development of a beautiful private garden extending to approximately 5 acres near Salisbury, Wiltshire. The garden has evolved over recent years, combining mature established areas with newly developed spaces and areas still requiring further design and enhancement, offering an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable horticulturist to make a lasting impact.
The gardens were inherited by the current owners around six years ago and have been thoughtfully developed with the owner’s own passion and enthusiasm for gardening playing a key role. The owner is now seeking a skilled and experienced gardener who can take full ownership of the garden’s maintenance, development, and ongoing progression, while working closely with the Estate Manager where responsibilities occasionally overlap.
The gardens are diverse and provide year-round horticultural interest including expansive lawns meticulously lined with mixed beds, herbaceous borders and sculpted shrubs, a charming courtyard featuring varied planting, an enchanting walkway formed by climbing wisteria, and mature and young specimen trees throughout the property. In addition, there is a large productive kitchen garden, an impressive Alitex glasshouse used primarily for growing fruit and vegetables, several smaller multipurpose glasshouses, and a substantial fruit cage. The gardener will soon benefit from a robotic mower for the lawns, allowing the successful candidate to dedicate more time to the detailed horticultural care and ongoing enhancement of the gardens.
This role would suit a passionate horticulturist who enjoys working independently and taking pride in the ownership of a private garden. The successful candidate will have excellent plant knowledge, practical horticultural skills, and experience maintaining mature private gardens to a high standard. Particular attention will be required for the maintenance of specialist features, including cloud-pruned hedges, making previous experience in detailed topiary and ornamental pruning highly desirable. Working predominantly within an organic gardening approach, however, PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates would be advantageous.
The Sole Gardener will be entirely responsible for the day-to-day management of the gardens throughout the year, planning seasonal tasks and ensuring the gardens continue to flourish. An Estate Manager is employed on the property, and while there will occasionally be some overlap with general estate duties, such as pathway maintenance, horticulture will remain the primary focus of the role. Contractors can also be appointed for specialist projects or additional support when required.
The gardens continue to evolve, with several areas identified for renovation and redevelopment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to these future projects, with the level of involvement tailored to their individual strengths, interests, and experience.
Applicants should have previous experience working within a private estate, country house, or substantial private garden environment. A recognised horticultural qualification would be advantageous, together with excellent plant knowledge and a proactive, self-motivated approach. A full UK driving licence and access to their own vehicle are essential, and the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Basic DBS check.
The position is offered on either a four or five-day working week (weekdays only), with the salary pro-rated accordingly for a four-day schedule. The successful candidate will receive 28 days’ annual leave including bank holidays, together with additional time off over the Christmas period.
SALARY: £35,000 – £40,000 depending on experience
