Description
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Gardener to manage and maintain a beautiful five-acre private garden in Rutland. Developed over the past 25 years, this exceptional private garden features sweeping lawns and sculpted landforms, extensive herbaceous borders, a stunning rose garden, shade garden and prairie-style planting, together with impressive water features including a rill and natural swimming pond. The gardens are regularly opened to the public through the National Garden Scheme (NGS), and the owners also host guided garden tours throughout the year.
Working closely with the property owners, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and ongoing enhancement of the gardens, ensuring they are presented to an exceptional standard throughout the seasons. The role is varied and hands-on, encompassing all aspects of ornamental garden maintenance, including planting, pruning, deadheading, weeding and mulching across the extensive herbaceous borders, rose garden, shade garden and prairie planting. The Gardener will also assist with the care and presentation of the lawns and landforms, oversee tree maintenance, monitor plant health, and identify and manage pests and diseases.
The successful applicant will grow and maintain seasonal vegetables, salads, fruit and flowers, harvesting produce throughout the year. Regular use of horticultural machinery, including mowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers, will form part of the role, together with general garden maintenance to ensure the entire property remains immaculately presented. On occasion, the Gardener will also assist the owners by leading guided garden tours and engaging with visitors during National Garden Scheme open days.
In addition to the horticultural responsibilities, the successful candidate will act as a trusted key holder, taking responsibility for the security of the property when required. During periods when the owners are away, the Gardener will also be expected to provide attentive day-to-day care for the owners’ three Spaniels, ensuring their welfare and maintaining the smooth running of the property in the owners’ absence.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and knowledgeable horticulturist with excellent practical gardening skills and a genuine passion for maintaining gardens to a high standard. They will good plant knowledge and have previous experience working within private gardens, estates or similar horticultural environments. The successful applicant will be confident carrying out all aspects of ornamental garden maintenance, have experience operating garden machinery, and be capable of identifying and managing common pests and plant health issues. Experience in growing fruit, vegetables and seasonal produce would be highly advantageous.
The role would suit someone who is enthusiastic, personable and self-motivated, with the ability to organise and manage their own workload effectively. A calm, resilient and professional approach is essential, together with excellent attention to detail and pride in producing quality work. Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence de to location of the property, and relevant machinery training or certification would be beneficial.
This is a full-time, permanent position working Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. A two-bedroom cottage can be available for the successful applicant. Council tax is paid by the employer; all other bills are the tenant’s responsibility.
