Description
Datavant is the data collaboration platform trusted for healthcare. Guided by our mission to make the world’s health data secure, accessible and actionable, we provide critical data solutions for organizations across the healthcare ecosystem - including providers, health plans, researchers, and life sciences companies. From fulfilling a single patient’s request for their medical records to powering the AI revolution in healthcare, Datavanters are building the future of how data is connected and used to improve health. By joining Datavant today, you’re stepping onto a driven and highly collaborative team that is passionate about creating transformative change in healthcare. About the Role
HealthSource is the operational backbone of Datavant's release of information business — the product that thousands of internal operations specialists use every day to manage, process, and fulfill medical record requests. When HealthSource works well, our teams can move fast and our customers get accurate, timely records. When it doesn't, the friction shows up immediately and at scale.
We're looking for a Senior UX Designer who is genuinely energized by the complexity of operational workflows — someone who can spend time with our ops teams, understand what slows them down, and turn those insights into designs that make hard work feel easier. This is a high-impact IC role with clear ownership: you'll be the primary designer for HealthSource, working closely with product, engineering, and operations to shape one of our most business-critical products.
What You'll Do
Research & Discovery
Conduct regular generative and evaluative research with internal operations users — including contextual inquiry, task analysis, and usability testing
Build a deep understanding of HealthSource workflows: how requests move through the system, where errors occur, and what slows teams down
Synthesize qualitative and quantitative signals (support ticket patterns, usage data, direct interviews) into clear problem definitions
Maintain and evolve a living view of the user, their mental models, and the operational context they work in
Design & Systems
Own end-to-end design for HealthSource features — from early concepts through to polished, spec-ready deliverables
Create detailed interaction designs, flows, and prototypes that handle edge cases and error states, not just the happy path
Contribute to and enforce consistency within Datavant's design system, identifying components to standardize across products
Design for efficiency at volume — our ops users process hundreds of requests per day, so every friction point compounds
Balance short-term iterative improvements with longer-term systemic redesign opportunities
Collaboration & Craft
Partner closely with the HealthSource PM and engineering team throughout the product development cycle
Work directly with operations managers and specialists to validate designs early and often
Communicate design rationale clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Contribute to product strategy conversations — you'll be expected to have a perspective on what problems are worth solving and why
Coordinate with the broader design team on shared patterns, principles, and critique
What We're Looking For
Required
5+ years of UX design experience, with a portfolio demonstrating strong craft across research, interaction design, and systems thinking
Demonstrated experience designing for internal tools, ops platforms, or workflow-heavy products — not just consumer experiences
Fluency in the full research toolkit: when to use what method, how to synthesize findings, and how to bring stakeholders along
Strong interaction design skills — you think carefully about state, error handling, progressive disclosure, and keyboard/accessibility patterns
Experience contributing to or working within a design system
