The Senior Program Officer, Resilient Rivers provides technical analysis and assistance, engagement and project management in specific geographies, with an emphasis on alignment with WWF Priority Places and the Resilience, Infrastructure, and Conserved Areas Big Bets, supporting the global Connected Rivers of Resilience Initiative (CRRI) and its vision of connected rivers being valued, protected and restored for the benefit of people and nature. The postholder leads technical assessments underpinning project and programme development, focused on quantifying the hydrologic benefits of freshwater protection and restoration, and takes responsibility for map making, knowledge management, reporting, and monitoring and evaluation. The role supports and leads report writing, proposal development and resource mobilisation with public and private sector partners, and liaises with Corporate Water Stewardship colleagues, Science and Protected and Conserved Areas teams, and other WWF offices on technical, research and policy insights relating to CRRI, freshwater protection mechanisms including PFPs and OECMs, and freshwater restoration and resilience. Communications form a substantial part of the work: the Senior Program Officer co-leads communications and outreach for CRRI, writing about and presenting the initiative internally to WWF staff and externally at workshops and conferences. The role also engages WWF offices to connect the initiative with other organisational priorities, conducts research and analyses new technical information, policies, tools and global trends related to freshwater protection and restoration, and develops, plans and implements components of new and ongoing projects and grants. Regular interaction with WWF-International, other WWF offices and associate organisations, grantees and consultants is expected, alongside communication with conservation organisations, universities, NGOs, corporations and government agencies both directly and through coalitions. WWF asks for a bachelor’s degree in hydrology, environmental or freshwater science or a related field, with a master’s degree preferred, and six years of professional experience, or three with an advanced degree, in natural resource management, conservation, hydrology, water resource engineering, or landscape or regional planning. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to conduct quantitative analysis of the benefits of freshwater protection and restoration. Basic GIS skills are required, with advanced GIS and Python programming skills preferred. The role also calls for excellent writing and public speaking, strong interpersonal skills and cross-cultural experience, the ability to work independently under pressure, familiarity with Microsoft Office, and demonstrated knowledge of fundraising, budgeting and monitoring donor compliance.
