Reference: BIOPOLIS 2023-24 Job description: Research Fellowship Reference: BIOPOLIS 2023-24 Main research field: Electronics and Ecology We offer a Research Fellowship to a PhD student (Reference BIOPOLIS 2023-24) on the scope of the project Oceanlog: Atlantic-wide long-term collaborative temperature and biodiversity observation, FCT grant PTDC/BIA-BMA/4848/2021, at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS to support the manufacture of autonomous temperature loggers, their deployment and servicing. Tasks will initially involve assembling new electronic boards, integration with batteries and antennae, encapsulation, and programming. Then, the student will help deploy those data loggers in study locations (rocky shores) while also servicing those that have been previously deployed. Additional tasks include further developments and improvements to the hardware. Finally, the BI holder will further support the analysis of field data in accordance with the project milestones. Admission requirements : Candidates with an MSc degree in Biology and a BSc degree in Electronics, or an MSc degree in Electronics and a BSc degree in Biology, preferably with previous experience in electronic prototyping towards Biological/Ecological applications. Preference will be given to candidates with: • Experience in rocky shore fieldwork. • Experience in electronic development and SMD soldering. • Programming skills in R, CPP and python. • Fluency in English. • Good communication skills. The candidate should be able to work well within a team and possess troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. The candidate must present a CV compatible with the work plan. Working plan : Within the scope of the work, the following tasks will be developed: • Assembly of electronic boards, integration with batteries and antennae, encapsulation, and programming. • Datalogger deployment and servicing in study locations. • Supporting prototyping and development of electronics. • Analysis of temperature data in R. • Supporting reporting activities and dissemination of results. • Attending project meetings. • Writing scientific articles. Workplace : The work will primarily be done at the CIBIO-InBIO, Vairão, Vila do Conde. Working periods in partner Research Institutions may take place. Duration of the fellowship: 8 months Monthly stipend : Monthly stipend is €1199,64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/Tabela_de_Valores_SMM_2023.pdf). Payment will be made by bank transfer every month. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and accident insurance. Expect starting date : 1st of June 2023 Selection criteria : Assessment will be made in accordance with admission requirements (see above) and will be based on: a) the relevance of previous experience with electronic development and fieldwork (70%); b) the quality of the curriculum vitae (30%); The jury may not award the fellowship if the quality of the candidates is inferior to what is intended. In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best-positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications about the curricular elements and additional information, as well as evaluating the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate. The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 80% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 20% interview. Jury composition : The Jury will be chaired by Dr Fernando P. Lima (CIBIO, having as effective members Dr Rui Seabra (CIBIO) and Dr Cátia Monteiro (CIBIO).
