Description The role of the Principal Organist is to prayerfully and thoughtfully work to foster a spirit of awe and reverence for the parishes of St. George in Odessa and St. Jude in Oak Grove through the use of Sacred Music in the liturgy. The principal organist will work with parishioners to bring them into the celebration of the liturgy and reports directly to the pastor or parochial administrator. Essential Duties: • Weekly, select the music for the Sacred Liturgy at the parishes, particularly the Sunday liturgies. • Play the organ for all weekend and Holy Day liturgies. • Find replacements for weekends and Holy Days when unavailable. • Foster a desire in the parishioners for a deeper participation in the liturgy through cantering and other liturgically appropriate instruments. • Train all cantors and musicians. • Assist with weddings and funerals or find subs when unavailable. • Assist the pastor or administrator with any other needs. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Ability to work independently, self-starter. • Ability to create, organize and execute plans; takes initiative. • Ability to collaborate and build an effective team/relationships at various levels. • Attention to detail. • Strong communication skills. Qualifications: • Practicing Catholic with ethical standards, personal integrity, and conduct consistent with the morals and teachings of the Catholic Church. • Passionate about the Church, Liturgy and Music, and building relationships. • Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent experience.
