Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution invites applications for a Postdoctoral Investigator in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department, focused on marine radioactivity in the ocean. The work covers applications of natural radionuclides in understanding the ocean biological carbon pump, alongside ocean radioactivity measurements in response to releases from nuclear facilities such as the nuclear power plants at Fukushima Dai-ichi. Funding comes through the Institution’s Center for Marine Radioactivity, working largely on projects under the supervision of Dr Ken Buesseler, and on new projects initiated by the postholder in collaboration with Dr Buesseler’s lab group. Candidates need a PhD along with experience and publications in the applications of thorium-uranium disequilibria in ocean science, covering field sampling, analyses, modelling and interpretation of results. Understanding of, and willingness to use, alternative particle flux tools such as sediment traps and camera-based systems is described as essential. Seagoing experience and the ability to function in a complicated ship-based environment are required, including the physical ability to lift and move sampling gear on deck and process samples at sea. A background in radiochemical analyses of marine samples in the lab is important, particularly as it relates to beta counting. The role also calls for skills in writing manuscripts and proposals, data processing including modelling and graphical work, and presentation of results through lectures and principal investigator gatherings. Travel is required for research cruises and for relevant conferences and gatherings.
