Employment Start Date: 1 September 2026
Contract Length: 4 years
City: Rovereto

Department: Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory
Description: The Gozzi laboratory (gozzilab.it), at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Rovereto (Italy), invites applications for a PhD scholarship focused on mapping large-scale brain networks in behaving mice using functional ultrasound imaging (fUSI). Research at the Gozzi lab is aimed at understanding how the brain works as an integrated network in health and disease. The Gozzi lab addresses these questions by combining causal neural manipulations in rodents with functional neuroimaging methods (fMRI, fUS), multimodal recordings, and cutting-edge neuro-computational approaches.
The aim of the project is to map large-scale networks engaged by cognitive tasks in mice using fUSI (https://doi.org/10.64898/2026.02.05.704055). The position requires availability to carry out experiments in rodents, and will entail the analysis of the resulting functional data The successful candidate will join an international, and multidisciplinary research environment at IIT and will be linked to the PhD program in Cognitive and Brain Sciences in partnership with the University of Trento.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an MSc (or equivalent) in STEM-related fields, and a strong interest in brain-wide functional mapping and systems neuroscience. Prior experience with rodent handling and/or image analysis and/or coding (e.g., MATLAB/Python) are a plus.
The studentship will be part of the international doctoral school in Cognitive and Brain Sciences at the University of Trento. Admission to the doctoral school is subject to a competitive selection process in accordance with its regulations; shortlisted candidates for the scholarship will be expected to apply to and be admitted through the official doctoral school selection. The call is now live at the following link. To formally apply, please follow the guidelines on the select the topic specific grant #8 in the application.

Interested candidates are invited to submit the following materials to alessandro.gozzi @ iit.it
• A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• A concise statement of motivation and research interests relevant to the project
• Contact details for two academic referees
• A copy of the Master’s thesis (if available)
