Description
Country: Italy Institution: Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati Department: Description: 1 PhD position in Neurobiology is available at SISSA with start date in November 2026. Applications need to be made through the official portal: https://www.sissa.it/bandi/ammissione-ai-corsi-di-phd-della-sissa-lanno-accademico-202627-admission-sissa-phd-courses SISSA offers 4-year paid PhD programs in Neurobiology in six laboratories that span topics across all sensory systems, the peripheral nervous system, motor systems, behavior assays and technology development using techniques from molecular/cellular to systems neuroscience in various model organisms, cell cultures and tissue explants. The 4-year program includes targeted courses and lectures in the first ~5 months of the program. Further attendance of international workshops and conferences is encouraged and supported with additional school and lab specific funds. Prospective PhD candidates apply to and are selected by the graduate school and identify their ideal host laboratory through conversations with faculty and/or small lab rotations. Collaborations across Neurobiology labs as well as with other SISSA graduate schools (Cognitive Neuroscience, Genomics, Data Science) are common and increase the exposure to different approaches, networks and mentorship opportunities. SISSA is a top institute in Italy combining research in Neuroscience, Physics and Mathematics. New PhD candidates will find a stimulating network of students, school support with Visa and other bureaucratic questions, and regularly organized international seminars and conferences. The institute is located in the international, research-heavy town of Trieste at the Adriatic Sea and close to the Dolomites, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria. The city provides ample possibilities for outdoor and indoor activities. Interested candidates are encouraged to look at prospective host PIs before submitting their application. Questions about the program itself can be addressed to the student office at phd[at]sissa.it or the PhD Coordinator Prof. Ballerini and Vice Coordinator Prof. Reinhard through nb-phd-coordinator[at]sissa.it.
