Description
At WVU Medicine, we're excited you're considering joining our team. This position provides technical assistance for diagnostic and interventional procedures using sterile and aseptic technique, acquires all imaging and post-processing, and provides emergency services on call. Based at WVU Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, this is a full-time role scheduled for 40 hours per week.
## What You'll Need
To be considered, you must be a graduate of a Medical Imaging Program and hold the required state radiography license where you'll practice: MD requires a Radiographer license through the Maryland Board of Physicians; OH through the Ohio Board of Radiology; PA has no state license requirement; WV requires a Radiography License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
You'll also need national certification—ARRT registration as a Radiography Technologist. In MD, OH, and WV that's required upon hire; in PA it must be obtained within six months of graduation from your Medical Imaging program. Additionally, you'll need Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire and must pass state and federal criminal background checks as applicable.
Preferred qualifications include obtaining Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire and having one year of experience as an interventional radiologic technologist.
## The Work Itself
You'll be responsible for monitoring and interpreting hemodynamic data, observing sterile technique while preparing supplies, and maintaining patient and unit confidentiality. You'll prepare the entry site for procedures, continuously monitor the patient's ECG and blood pressure while documenting and advising the physician, and participate in the on-call rotation, remaining available for emergent procedures 24 hours a day. You'll act as the lab's code team, initiating resuscitative measures and cardiac defibrillators under physician supervision.
Accurate documentation and billing are essential, as is participating in educational and in-service opportunities. You'll also instruct radiography students in positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and use of accessory devices. This role maintains specialization in Neuroradiology and Vascular IR procedures, contributes to inventory management, prepares patients prior to procedures, and takes part in performance improvement activities.
For facilities with specialty accreditation, you'll complete annual required education as defined by accreditation standards, through CBLs, trainings, in-services, or competency validation.
## Physical and Environmental Expectations
You should be able to stand for long periods while wearing lead aprons, lift, push, or pull at least 40 pounds, sit for extended periods, and differentiate shades of gray on a monitor or photograph. The work environment is clinical, with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, body fluids, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock risk, and radiation. Noise is usually moderate, and you'll maintain radiation safety.
## Skills and Professional Development
You'll need to communicate professionally with physicians and peers, be knowledgeable in sterile technique, acquire/archive/transmit images to data storage systems, read and interpret professional journals, operating manuals, product info or regulations, interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form, and solve practical problems with limited standardization.
WVU Medicine offers an Interventional Radiology Clinical Ladder to support your professional growth. Level 1 requires no experience and is for technologists with less than 12 months. Level 2 needs one year of experience and completion of Skill Set Tech 1 and a Workday course. Level 3 requires three years, one continuing education pathway, three leadership/supervisory skills, and Skill Set Tech 1 & 2. Level 4 requires five years, one CE pathway, five leadership/supervisory skills, and Skill Set Tech 1, 2 & 3.
