Mixed Animal Veterinary Assistant or Technician Department: Veterinary Assistants Employment Type: Full Time Location: Washington, Georgia Description Wilkes County Veterinary Services is a well-established mixed animal veterinary hospital serving Washington, GA and the surrounding rural communities. Our team provides comprehensive care to a wide range of patients—from companion animals to livestock—delivering high-quality medicine with a strong focus on client relationships and community impact. This is a dynamic, hands-on role supporting veterinarians across small animal appointments, large animal cases, and on-call emergencies . Candidates should be comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical environment as well as traveling for farm calls , assisting with urgent and routine care for large animals. Participation in the on-call rotation is a key component of this position , supporting emergency care needs for both small and large animal patients outside of standard business hours. Wilkes County Veterinary Services 1093 Lexington Rd, Washington, GA 30673 Your day-to-day responsibilities will include: Clinical & Surgical Support • Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and procedures for both small and large animals • Prepare and restrain patients safely for exams, diagnostics, and surgery • Monitor anesthesia and support surgical procedures and recovery Large Animal & Farm Call Support • Assist with farm calls and field services , including handling livestock and supporting ambulatory care • Prepare equipment and supplies for off-site visits • Support veterinarians during after-hours emergency calls , including large animal cases Diagnostics & Treatment • Perform laboratory testing, radiographs, and basic diagnostics • Administer medications, vaccines, and fluids as directed • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records Client Communication & Facility Support • Communicate effectively with clients, providing education and updates on patient care • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked treatment environment Clinic Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Saturday: 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM Sunday: Closed On-Call Rotation (Required): • Approximately 1 night per week or every other week • Weekend on-call rotation every 6-8 weeks • Includes after-hours emergency calls and farm calls , supporting both large and small animal patients Skills Knowledge and Expertise • High school diploma or equivalent required • 1+ years of experience in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital preferred • Experience with large animals (equine, livestock) strongly preferred • Credentialed Veterinary Technicians (LVT, RVT, CVT) encouraged to apply • Strong interest in mixed animal veterinary medicine (large and small animal care) • Confidence handling both companion animals and livestock • Comfortable working in a clinical setting and on farms/rural environments • Ability to remain calm and effective during emergency and on-call situations • Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills • Ability to lift 40+ lbs and work on your feet for extended periods • Willingness to learn, adapt, and support a wide variety of cases What We Offer Compensation & Benefits / What We Offer • Starting at $14/hour, based on experience • HeadStart Program - Student Loan Repayment for Early Career Veterinary Technicians • Health, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance • 401(k) retirement plan • Paid time off (PTO) and holidays • Employee wellness and mental health resources • Employee discounts on veterinary services and products Professional Growth & Development • Continuing education (CE) support and career development opportunities • Exposure to a diverse caseload across mixed animal veterinary medicine (large and small animal) • Clear pathways for advancement within a growing network of veterinary hospitals Licensure & Credential Support • Assistance with LVT licensure fees and renewals • Support for maintaining credentials and advancing technical skills Education & Scholarship Opportunities • Access to scholarship programs for team members interested in pursuing further growth and development: • Veterinary Technology (LVT pathway for Veterinary Assistants) • Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) certification for individuals interested in the leadership track. • Programs offered through Penn Foster and other accredited partners • Gain hands-on experience in a true mixed animal practice • Work closely with experienced veterinarians across a diverse caseload • Develop skills in both clinical and field-based veterinary medicine • Be part of a supportive, team-oriented environment that values mentorship • Make a meaningful impact in a close-knit rural community If you are a Veterinary Assistant or Technician looking to build your career in mixed animal medicine , with opportunities to support large animal care, farm calls, and emergency services , we encourage you to apply.
