Recruitment Incentives Available Oils and greases all machinery, including steering gear, tail shaft, bearings, etc. by applying lubricant directly to moving parts or friction Surfaces or by filling cups or reservoirs to proper level and adjusting feed of lubricants to parts . Makes regular rounds of machinery; takes temperature readings to determine whether bearings are overheated; notifies watch engineer if heat is excessive or there is danger of breakdown. Takes action himself, if situation so warrants. Is assigned a regular station or area in the engine room for which he is responsible for cleaning, painting. etc. Periodically checks bilges and operates bilge pumps. Connects and disconnects hoses when taking on oil and water. Operates manifold switch oil level from one tank to another when it is being pumped aboard, or observes oil level and notifies man at manifold switch. Assists watch engineer in making repairs to Diesel engines by lifting or holding parts as they are assembled; cleans parts; carries tools and materials or under supervision of the engineer disassembles engine for repair. Under close supervision of the watch engineer operates engines as instructed from the bridge when dredge is operated by the engine room controls. When conditions necessitate, must be able to switch from bridge to engine room controls. Receives training in safe work methods and utilizes all prescribed safety equipment in performing duties. Conducts routine maintenance of diesel propulsion system, pumping and auxiliary systems ventilation controls auxiliary engines, automatic control consoles, sanitary and lubrication systems. Assists higher graded personnel with the repair and more difficult maintenance of these systems.
