Assignment
High-sensitivity spectroscopy is critical for detecting weak optical signals such as:
• Trace element emission (LIBS)
• Low-concentration Raman scattering
• Weak fluorescence
• Plasma diagnostics at low power
• Environmental monitoring
Conventional spectrometers often use reflective gratings (e.g., Czerny–Turner configuration). While versatile, these systems may suffer from:
• Multiple mirror reflections (losses)
• Alignment sensitivity
• Stray light
• Larger optical footprint
A transmission grating-based spectrometer offers:
• Fewer reflective losses
• Compact inline geometry
• High diffraction efficiency
• Potentially improved throughput
• Better mechanical simplicity
This project aims to design and evaluate a transmission grating spectrometer optimized for maximum optical sensitivity.
Objectives
• Design a compact transmission grating spectrometer
• Optimize optical throughput for weak signal detection
• Compare sensitivity against conventional reflective grating systems
• Validate performance experimentally

• Mechanical Engineering
