This position is responsible for leading strategic governance initiatives focused on GIS inventory management, workforce role and skills standardization, data lifecycle governance, and enterprise-wide special projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong governance experience and a proven ability to improve organizational GIS data quality, consistency, and governance maturity across multiple business units. Job Description The GIS Governance Coordinator plays a critical role in advancing enterprise GIS governance initiatives and supporting VDOT Business Plan objectives through standardized governance practices and strategic collaboration. This position leads efforts to strengthen GIS governance frameworks, improve enterprise data management processes, coordinate cross-functional initiatives, and promote consistent, high-quality GIS data management throughout the organization. The successful candidate will collaborate with technical and business stakeholders, develop governance documentation, support strategic planning efforts, and present recommendations to leadership and governance committees. Responsibilities GIS Governance & Strategy Establish, implement, and continuously improve enterprise GIS governance practices. Lead initiatives involving GIS inventory management, governance frameworks, workforce role standardization, and skills development. Support enterprise GIS strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives. Advance GIS-related VDOT Business Plan objectives through governance leadership. Data Governance & Process Management Promote governance practices supporting data stewardship, lifecycle management, metadata, and data quality. Develop and maintain governance documentation, standards, and supporting materials. Document workflows, governance processes, and operational procedures to improve consistency and efficiency. Support enterprise data management initiatives across GIS environments. Project Coordination & Collaboration Coordinate cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure consistent adoption of GIS governance practices. Facilitate collaboration across departments to align governance initiatives with organizational objectives. Manage complex governance projects while monitoring progress, priorities, and deliverables. Reporting & Communication Prepare reports, presentations, executive briefings, and governance committee materials. Present technical concepts and governance recommendations to both technical and nontechnical audiences. Conduct research and provide analytical recommendations supporting governance decisions. Technical Support Support governance initiatives involving Esri technologies, enterprise geodatabases, and spatial data services. Contribute subject matter expertise related to enterprise GIS environments and data management best practices.
