Description
Role Overview This internship places you inside Amnesty International Kenya’s Equality and Anti-Discrimination programme, where you will help turn human rights advocacy into concrete outputs: reports, campaign messages, and knowledge products that push for security accountability and an end to discrimination. Day to day, you will gather evidence from community voices, draft content for campaigns and publications, coordinate logistics for meetings and events, and act as a bridge between local communities and the organisation’s programme work. Key Responsibilities • Draft and compile an impact report covering the Equality and Anti-Discrimination activities delivered during your internship period. • Implement assigned projects, including components of the #HumanIsMyID Alliance work, and track progress for reporting. • Develop persuasive advocacy content focused on security accountability and anti-discrimination issues in Kenya, then coordinate with the communications team to ensure it reaches the right audiences. • Produce knowledge products—such as briefings, case studies, or issue papers—that highlight patterns of discrimination and rights violations in Kenya and propose practical reforms. • Provide administrative and logistical support for programme events, workshops, and other activities, ensuring smooth execution. • Represent the organisation at selected partner meetings and external working groups as needed. • Serve as a contact point between community members and Amnesty International Kenya, with support from the programme manager, to ensure grassroots perspectives inform advocacy. • Undertake additional reasonable duties assigned by the programme team to support broader organisational goals. Requirements & Qualifications • At least a bachelor’s degree in law, human rights, social sciences, or a closely related field. • Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate complex rights issues. • Demonstrated understanding of human rights principles, including feminist perspectives, equality, intersectionality, security accountability, and non-discrimination. • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. • Strong organisational, planning, and administrative skills, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-moving environment. • Prior experience with human rights NGOs is desirable but not essential. • Volunteer or internship experience in an NGO or human rights setting is an advantage. • Basic familiarity with the Kenyan human rights landscape and the role of civil society is preferred. What We Offer / Why Join • Hands-on exposure to equality, anti-discrimination, and civil and political rights work within a leading human rights organisation. • Opportunities to connect with practitioners and experts working on advocacy, research, and policy in the NGO sector. • Regular mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals to help you grow in your human rights career. • Practical learning that sharpens your ability to prioritise, make decisions, and respond to multidimensional discrimination and other rights violations.
