Description
AA Euro Group is currently recruiting for an Electrical Design Engineer on behalf of a leading contractor specialising in the design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established business involved in the successful delivery of critical power infrastructure projects for major utility and renewable energy clients.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and engineering of electrical systems associated with transmission and distribution substations, ensuring designs are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with client and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and produce electrical designs for HV and MV substation projects, including primary and secondary systems.
• Prepare and review single-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts.
• Undertake electrical calculations including load flow, fault level studies, earthing design, and cable sizing.
• Support the preparation of technical specifications and procurement documentation for electrical equipment.
• Coordinate design activities with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, utility providers, and subcontractors.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and client requirements.
• Participate in design reviews, HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability assessments.
• Provide technical support during project delivery, commissioning, and handover phases.
• Assist with value engineering initiatives to optimise project costs and performance.
• Review and approve supplier and subcontractor design submissions.
• Maintain accurate design records and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements
• Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3 years` experience in electrical design within the power, utilities, energy, or infrastructure sectors.
• Experience working on HV/MV substation projects, transmission, distribution, or renewable energy developments.
• Strong understanding of primary plant equipment including transformers, switchgear, protection systems, CTs, VTs, and associated infrastructure.
• Proficiency in electrical design software and calculation packages.
• Knowledge of relevant standards including IEC, BS EN, and utility-specific design requirements.
• Experience producing technical drawings using AutoCAD or equivalent software.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
• Full driving licence and willingness to attend project and client sites when required.
Desirable
• Experience with National Grid, ESB Networks, SSE, SPEN, NIE Networks, or other utility providers.
• Familiarity with protection and control systems design.
• Knowledge of earthing studies and power system analysis software.
• Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional accreditation.
• Experience supporting commissioning and energisation activities.
