Location: Remote, California, USA Employment type: Full-time Salary: USD $128,000–$275,500/yr (varies by location within California) Application deadline: 29 June 2026 The Nature Conservancy’s California Chapter is seeking a Director of Science for its California Water Programme, a senior leadership role providing strategic, technical, and scientific direction to the Conservancy’s freshwater conservation work in and beyond California. The programme focuses on achieving resilient rivers, thriving wetlands, and sustainable groundwater-dependent ecosystems. The position is fully remote within California and involves travel of up to 50% of the time, varying seasonally. The Science Director leads and manages a multidisciplinary team of scientists, sets priorities for science engagement, and ensures delivery of the science needed to execute conservation strategies across surface water and groundwater initiatives. The role works in close partnership with the Water Programme Director to align science, policy, and place-based conservation work. External responsibilities include representing TNC as a freshwater science expert in technical and public fora, engaging partners, stakeholders, donors, community groups, industry, and media, and maintaining a broad network of collaborators. The role also involves developing funding proposals, managing grants and contracts, and overseeing scientific publications. Candidates should hold a PhD in a relevant science field with eight years of related experience. Demonstrated experience leading multi-disciplinary teams, conducting and publishing original research, fundraising and writing grant proposals, and working on socio-ecological and freshwater conservation issues in California is required.
