The Director, Great Plains Science oversees the Science programme for WWF’s Great Plains Program, whose purpose is to ensure the programme is guided by robust science to sustain and expand intact grasslands, enhance the ecological function of prairie ecosystems, and restore keystone and endangered wildlife, while keeping WWF a leader in grassland conservation science. The role manages a team of two to four science specialists and senior specialists, develops and maintains partnerships across the science community, prioritises strategies to meet programme objectives, measures progress toward goals, and leads fundraising for programme priorities. Responsibilities span team management, including facilitating communication and collaboration and setting clear work plans; strategy development and implementation in coordination with the Sustainable Ranching Initiative, Great Plains Wildlife Initiative, Wildlife Team and Freshwater teams, delivering results on time and within budget; and partnership development with leaders across government, non-profits, the ranching community, Native Nations and the private sector to improve grassland management, protect land from conversion, and restore native grasslands and wildlife. The Director also coordinates with WWF Policy and Government Affairs to support science needs for policy advocacy, serves on the Great Plains leadership team to drive integration across programmes, and leads the conceptual framework and drafting of funding proposals in coordination with WWF Development, Private Sector Engagement and the Great Plains team. A master’s degree and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience are required, with a PhD contributing toward experience. The role calls for knowledge of and experience working in the Great Plains ecoregion, expert scientific knowledge of the drivers, threats and opportunities in grassland conservation, and scientific leadership on grassland conversion, ecological and social indicators, climate mitigation and biodiversity accounting, and wildlife restoration. Also sought are deep familiarity with ecological and conservation principles at ecoregional scale, knowledge of community-led conservation and applicable social science, excellent knowledge of the national and regional conservation arena and its key players and policies, strong fundraising and proposal-writing skills, demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing complex projects, and experience developing partnerships with universities, non-profits, private entities, government agencies, tribal colleges and funders. Willingness to travel up to 5 to 10 percent is required, and knowledge of and experience working with Native nations in the Northern Great Plains is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates based in Bozeman or elsewhere within the Northern Great Plains region (central and eastern Montana, western South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and possibly Colorado).
