Description
Theatre Green Book has no office base and the team predominantly work remotely, with ‘in person’ time scheduled a few times each month. Webinars and Events are delivered both online and in person. The role offers flexibility for the successful candidate to work from home on a regular basis although in person attendance in London and national and international travel will also be an essential part of the job. We envisage that the role will be full time but would be open to considering 0.8 FTE (4 days per week) for the right candidate and a pro rata salary in line with this.
Main Purpose of the Role
We are seeking an inspirational and ambitious Director to build on the Theatre Green Book’s success to date and lead the new charity as a primary force for sustainability in theatre and the performing arts.
The Director will be responsible both for Theatre Green Book in the UK, and for the global network that unites independent Theatre Green Book licensees and partners across the world. They will make a major contribution to the future of the company, helping to build and expand strategic, collaborative networks, advocate in the sector for Theatre Green Book and sustainable working and continue to develop sector leading guidance and standards. We are looking for someone who is comfortable forging partnerships and strategic connections at all levels and who has the ability to motivate colleagues and collaborators.
The role offers opportunities for public speaking, global engagement and significant professional development alongside strategic planning and hands on delivery of our core UK programme.
Main Responsibilities of the Role
Strategic
• Work alongside the Board and the International Associate to develop, articulate and implement Theatre Green Book’s strategic plans to deliver sustainable National and International growth.
• Evolve Theatre Green Book’s funding model identifying new business opportunities, funding potential and income streams.
• Work with the International Associate and the Board to evolve plans to fully integrate the international networks and partners into existing Theatre Green Book structures.
• Create and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including strategic partners, Founder supporters, International and National partners, and volunteer committees.
• Seek out opportunities to promote and advocate for Theatre Green Book within the arts and culture sector, within environmental sustainability forums and with UK and international governmental bodies.
• Work with the Board, Buro Happold (as 50% copyright holder), and the UK and International Advisory Councils to agree the timing and process for further development of new versions of the Theatre Green Book.
• Manage an effective, inclusive, compliant, and sustainable organisation, working with the Board, Advisory Councils and committees, staff, volunteer groups and other stakeholders.
Content
• Ensure Theatre Green Book content continues to evolve and meet the objectives of being based on both practical experience and scientific rigour.
• Leading, with Buro Happold and specialist writers, graphic designers and others, the continual development of the Theatre Green Book tools, including preparation of new versions when required. Managing the consultation processes, both within the UK and internationally (with the International Associate) to support this development.
• Develop, with the Theatre Green Book’s Producer, a programme of events activity and training which will support the adoption of Theatre Green Book at all levels.
• Oversee and update metrics for monitoring new sign ups
• Leading the dissemination of Theatre Green Book within the UK and internationally working with the International Associate to support the development and formalising of the international networks.
• Ensuring the provision of events, training, mentoring, certification and other schemes to support theatre’s transition to net zero and foster a culture of sharing expertise and increasing the sectors’ knowledge base.
Finance and Funding
• With the support of the external accountant, provide financial leadership, leading and developing a sustainable financial strategy, including an annual budget and quarterly Board financial reporting pack.
• Work with the external accountant to prepare statutory accounts and charity commission reports.
• Oversee the management of operational income and expenditure.
• Deliver effective financial and risk management for the organisation and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.
• Maintain existing funding relationships and develop new funding streams to support Theatre Green Book’s ongoing growth including international funding streams and revenue generation of all sorts.
Advocacy and Communications
• Advocate for Theatre Green Book and engage with stakeholders to ensure it retains and builds its reputation for collaborative endeavour, best practice and environmental rigour.
• Take responsibility for building the Theatre Green Book brand within the UK theatre industry.
• Ensure the effective dissemination of Theatre Green Book through clear advocacy, messaging and communications.
• Develop effective internal reporting mechanisms to ensure flow of information between team, committees, Councils and Board. People and relationships
• Oversee and manage the work of the core team, consultants, and other freelancers.
• Lead the development of a core team structure to support the work of a growing organisation.
• Demonstrate and uphold a strong commitment to equity, diversity, access and inclusion across all areas of your work.
• Build and maintain relationships, with a wide range of stakeholders within the UK and internationally, including funders and partners, policy-makers, sector lead and representative bodies, volunteers, theatre companies, theatre practitioners, theatre education professionals and supply chain companies.
Board, Advisory Councils and Committees
• Develop and maintain an excellent relationship with the Chair
• Support the board in trustee and council appointments, developing the skills and diversity of the Trustees, Council members and Committee Chairs and leading Trustee inductions.
• Attending all Board and Advisory Council meetings and regular Committee meetings.
• Work with the Chair to set agendas and agree Board business including regular written reports to the Board and Councils outlining progress in delivery against plans and budgets.
• Oversee governance administration to ensure compliance and smooth management of governance structures.

• Significant and relevant leadership experience with a wide professional network in theatre and the arts and an understanding of current challenges for the sector.

• Experience of charity fundraising / income generation and business planning.
• An understanding of budget management and financial processes.
• Credibility and expertise in the sector, including a track record in environmental sustainability.
• A collaborative, diplomatic and proactive approach to partnership working and network management
• A skilled people manager with strong leadership and inter-personal skills.
• A proven commitment to diversity, inclusion and representation.
• Knowledge and understanding of PR strategies, brand marketing and communications.
• Confident in advocacy and public facing communication both online and in person.
