The Conservation and Planning Coordinator supports the implementation of Eternal Mongolia, a Project Finance for Permanence initiative launched in 2024 by the Government of Mongolia, The Nature Conservancy, and partners, carrying USD 198 million of new investment over 15 years. The initiative expands and strengthens the effectiveness of Mongolia’s entire National Protected Area network, supports sustainable herding practices, and invests in sustainable tourism. Mongolia’s grasslands, including the Eastern Steppe, the world’s largest intact temperate grassland, face pressures from demand for minerals and natural resources and from livestock production. Reporting to the Mongolia PFP Director, the Coordinator supports conservation strategy and planning, and co-leads, oversees, and coordinates project activities on protected area management, sustainable financing, and community management, working closely with government agencies, the Mongolian Nature’s Legacy Foundation (MNLF), the Project Coordination Unit (PCU), regional offices, TNC global and Mongolia teams, and other conservation organisations. Planning and implementation duties include leading strategic planning for the project and the formulation and periodic revision of the annual work plan, including budget and procurement plans developed with the business unit, TNC, PFP global, and key partners, providing guidance on technical matters related to the PFP Implementation Plan and its conservation and community development goals, supporting business unit teams in accessing MNLF grants, supporting MNLF and PCU with the implementation plan, medium-term and annual work plans, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks, assisting the PFP Director with management, coordination, and supervision of implementation, and undertaking technical review of reports produced by the project team, consultants, and partners. Reporting, monitoring, and evaluation duties cover technical input into corporate, donor, and government reports, regular updates for TNC leadership and the Enduring Earth Partnership on progress, obstacles, and achievements, tracking milestones against the monitoring and evaluation plan, monitoring disbursements, evaluating progress against TNC’s 2030 goals and Enduring Earth metrics, preparing evidence of achievement for TNC’s recording system, and supporting the PFP Director in identifying expected delays and managing risks. The Coordinator also cultivates relationships with implementing and development partners, government officials, businesses, NGOs, and national and regional stakeholders, acts as a liaison between TNC and partners, supports resource mobilisation and proposal development for the grants programme, assesses capacity building needs, plans training sessions and workshops with technical experts and key stakeholders, and develops knowledge sharing mechanisms and resources. The role involves travel to remote locations for fieldwork including facilitating workshops and hands-on training, managing logistics for field activities, and compiling reports, managing databases, and tracking progress in the office. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, environment, social science, or a related discipline, at least five years of related work experience in conservation and sustainability, conservation planning and practice, and project implementation, experience guiding team members including assigning tasks and providing feedback, experience developing and managing multiple projects, experience designing and maintaining databases, experience training individuals and groups, familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and web browsers, and proficiency in strategic development and interpersonal communication in both Mongolian and English. Desired qualifications include five to ten years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience, the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities, experience using databases for data entry and report production, familiarity with current trends and practices in areas such as long-term fiscal planning, biodiversity, climate mitigation, and community development, and well-developed negotiation and diplomacy skills, including the ability to work productively with government officials and institutions that frequently disagree with one another. TNC offers benefits packages tailored to the countries where it works, which may include health care, retirement, parental leave, paid time off, life insurance, disability coverage, and an employee assistance programme. Recruitment uses a rolling interview process, with applications reviewed in the order received and the role unposted once a strong candidate pool is identified. Successful applicants must meet the requirements of TNC’s background screening process.
