Description
If you find a job or receive an interview through a listing on SEVENSEAS Media, please let your interviewer or employer know where you found it, it makes a real difference for us. The Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS) is seeking a capable, enthusiastic person to assist with communicating its mission and activities. The WOS supports ornithology by publishing The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, hosting annual conferences, and providing research grants and career mentoring to its members, welcoming all those involved in avian conservation, research, science and outreach. Major duties include managing the WOS’s social media accounts (currently Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky), creating and scheduling content about the society’s activities and avian research more generally; managing the WOS’s WordPress.com-based website, ensuring information is up to date and writing regular posts for the WOS blog; creating and managing a second standalone website for the society’s annual meeting each year; soliciting, editing and posting guest blog posts by bird researchers with WOS connections; writing email communications to the membership including quarterly email newsletters and annual membership renewal appeals; monitoring the WOS’s main contact email address daily, answering enquiries or forwarding them to the relevant committee chairs; communicating with the WOS President and volunteer committee chairs to obtain information for dissemination; and attending the annual in-person WOS conference to connect with members and share about the conference on social media, with travel costs and registration covered. Desired qualifications include strong written communication skills, the ability to work independently while communicating proactively with a range of stakeholders, the ability to understand scientific research and translate it into accessible and engaging digital content, experience with social media scheduling tools such as Later and Buffer, WordPress.com and Canva, and demonstrated experience managing websites, social media accounts, newsletters or similar communication efforts for a nonprofit or academic institution. Experience working with scientific societies or an interest in birds and ornithology is a plus but not mandatory. To apply, send a cover letter, resume and three references to WOS President Auriel Fournier ([email protected]) with the subject line “WOS Communications Contractor”.
