Position Title: Commissioning Training Specialist Position Location: Hybrid / on-site based on business and project needs, with regular travel to training facilities and job sites JOB SUMMARY The Commissioning Training Specialist develops, delivers, and continuously improves technical training that builds a safe, competent, and consistent commissioning workforce. The Commissioning Training Specialist must have advanced technical knowledge. This position works independently within established objectives, exercises sound judgment in prioritizing training needs and solutions, and partners with operations, engineering, EHS, and project leadership to close knowledge gaps, standardize best practices, accelerate workforce readiness, and improve project quality and safety. The Commissioning Training Specialist will normally receive little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments The Commissioning Training Specialist will work on problems of diverse scopes where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. The Commissioning Training Specialist will support commissioning Leads, Specialists, Technicians, subcontractors, clients, and other team members through structured onboarding, blended learning, hands-on labs, competency assessments, and field coaching across electrical, mechanical, controls, energy storage, and related mission-critical systems. This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Training Program Development and Continuous Improvement (30%) • Design, develop, and maintain comprehensive commissioning curricula, learning paths, modules, and materials covering safety, system energization, inspections, performance testing, troubleshooting, documentation, turnover, and handover processes. • Create engaging learning resources, including presentations, instructor guides, participant manuals, videos, e-learning modules, simulations, hands-on labs, checklists, job aids, work methods, schematics, and technical documentation. • Develop and update standardized procedures and training content for electrical distribution, substations, energy storage, HVAC/R, controls, metering, relay testing, and other systems supported by the commissioning organization. • Incorporate project lessons learned, technical updates, new equipment, regulatory changes, corrective actions, and evolving industry best practices into training programs and procedures. • Apply adult-learning principles and blended-learning methods to ensure content is practical, accessible, measurable, and aligned with the audience's experience and learning needs. • Identify and incorporate new training technologies and tools that improve knowledge transfer, hands-on practice, assessment quality, and workforce qualification. Training Delivery, Facilitation, and Field Support (30%) • Deliver classroom, virtual, field-based, and client-facing technical training for new hires, existing employees, subcontractors, and employees transitioning into new roles. • Lead practical training using equipment mock-ups, simulations, and real-world scenarios that replicate commissioning tasks such as point-to-point testing, control logic verification, inspection, troubleshooting, system energization, and emergency response. • Adapt delivery methods, pacing, examples, and practical exercises to match participant skill levels, learning styles, job responsibilities, and project requirements. • Conduct train-the-trainer programs, coaching, and instructor qualification activities to expand internal training capacity and ensure consistent delivery standards. • Provide on-site project support, field coaching, and targeted refresher training to address performance gaps, procedural changes, new technologies, and operational priorities. • Coordinate course schedules, facilities, attendance, course materials, instructor support, equipment readiness, and employee follow-up for technical, operational, safety, and regulatory programs. Onboarding, Assessment, Qualification, and Records (20%) • Manage structured onboarding and role-based development programs for Commissioning Leads, Specialists, Technicians, and other commissioning personnel. • Develop and administer written tests, practical evaluations, physical and technical assessments, skill demonstrations, and field performance reviews. • Maintain accurate, audit-ready learning records, including course completions, attendance, assessment results, certifications, qualifications, requalification dates, and individual development plans. • Monitor training status and compliance deadlines through the Learning Management System and other record systems, and communicate gaps, risks, and required actions to employees, supervisors, and managers. • Coordinate training and requalification requirements for new hires, employees moving into new roles, employees assigned new equipment or procedures, and employees with identified performance gaps. • Analyze participant feedback, assessment data, field performance, and program metrics to measure effectiveness and drive continuous improvement. Collaboration, Procedures, Safety, and Technology Integration (20%) • Partner with Commissioning Managers, engineering teams, project leaders, and subject matter experts to identify training needs and ensure programs remain technically accurate and operationally relevant. • Coordinate reviews of new or revised procedures, equipment, work methods, and training materials with Safety, Engineering Standards, Training, Operations, and other stakeholders before implementation. • Embed OSHA, NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, arc-flash, hazard communication, energized-work, and other applicable safety requirements into curricula, assessments, and hands-on activities. • Support the design and construction of equipment mock-ups, lab environments, and simulations used to develop procedures and provide realistic skills practice. • Promote adoption of standardized procedures through committee participation, presentations, roadshows, process-improvement meetings, coaching, and field engagement. • Support new technology initiatives, readiness reviews, audits, corrective actions, and occasional after-hours project or emergency response activities as assigned. Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ADVANCED LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING) • Advanced knowledge of the commissioning lifecycle, including inspections, pre-functional activities, system energization, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, documentation, turnover, and project closeout. • Working knowledge of electrical distribution, substations, energy storage systems, HVAC/R, mechanical systems, controls, metering, relay testing, and/or related mission-critical equipment and processes. • Advanced knowledge of technical training methods, adult-learning principles, instructional design, blended learning, hands-on facilitation, and competency-based qualification. • Working knowledge of applicable safety and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, arc-flash protection, hazard communication, and safe work practices. • Skilled at translating complex technical information, procedures, drawings, schematics, and engineering requirements into clear, practical, and usable learning materials. • Skilled at facilitating classroom, virtual, lab, and field-based instruction for participants with varied technical backgrounds and levels of experience. • Skilled at developing practical assessments, qualification criteria, scoring standards, feedback methods, and remediation plans. • Skilled at technical writing, procedure development, document control, course administration, recordkeeping, and maintaining audit-ready training documentation. • Skilled at using Learning Management Systems, SharePoint, document-control platforms, and Microsoft Office tools, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. • Ability to collaborate effectively with technical subject matter experts, field teams, managers, clients, subcontractors, engineering, EHS, and other cross-functional stakeholders. • Ability to manage multiple training programs, schedules, deadlines, records, systems, locations, and stakeholder priorities in a fast-paced environment. • Ability to evaluate training needs, identify performance gaps, use data and feedback to recommend improvements, and independently drive assigned work to completion. • Ability to adapt training methods and materials based on audience needs, technology changes, project conditions, and operational priorities. • Ability to work safely in office, classroom, laboratory, industrial, and active construction-site environments and comply with all required personal protective equipment and site-access requirements. • Valid driver's license and ability to satisfy applicable background, driving, and site-access requirements. TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS • Approximately 50% domestic travel; may include any or all 50 US states • Occasional international travel required based on program needs • Must reside near a major airport • Must hold a valid driver's license and ability to rent vehicles • Must hold or be able to obtain a valid REAL ID or passport for domestic air travel • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meetings for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor's degree in Education, Training, Instructional Design, Engineering, Science, Operations, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent technical, military, trade, or industry experience will be considered. • Three years of technical training, instructional design, commissioning, operations training, workforce qualification, procedure development, document control, or related work. OR • Six years of experience in technical training, instructional design, commissioning, operations training, workforce qualification, procedure development, document control, or related work. PLUS • Experience developing or coordinating training in a mission-critical, energy storage, utility, manufacturing, industrial, nuclear, chemical, construction, safety-critical, or regulated environment preferred. • Experience with electrical, mechanical, HVAC/R, controls, substation, relay, metering, energy storage, or related commissioning systems and activities preferred. • Experience main
