Summary
The Café Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of their café, setting a clear vision for excellence in both team performance and guest experience. They will build, train, and develop a talented team that delivers exceptional results, fosters a dynamic and inclusive culture of learning, and embodies the values of Stumptown. The Café Manager sets the pace for hospitality, quality, and innovation, ensuring that the café continually evolves to meet and exceed guest expectations. They work in close partnership with the retail leadership team and across departments to create one-of-a-kind experiences for guests and provide ongoing leadership and growth opportunities for café staff.
Essential Functions
• Set a clear vision and pace for the café, creating the conditions by which the team can thrive.
• Lead daily operations of the café, ensuring smooth, efficient, and guest-focused service.
• Build, train, and develop a high-performing team; foster a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Create and maintain an exceptional guest experience that reflects Stumptown’s values and quality standards.
• Serve as a visible and approachable leader—representing Stumptown’s mission, voice, and values both within the café and in the community.
• Manage financial performance of the café, including inventory management, labor efficiency, and all monetary transactions.
• Maintain operational excellence, including cleanliness, safety, and equipment maintenance.
• Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one coaching to align the team around goals and encourage professional development.
• Collaborate with Retail Leadership, education, and cross-functional departments to ensure consistency and innovation in offerings and service.
• Oversee product quality and consistency through team training, quality control practices, and regular tasting and evaluation.
• Stay current on product knowledge and industry trends; actively share insights with the team to inspire ongoing learning.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the café and Stumptown’s broader mission.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• Provide leadership for all café employees.
Qualifications
• 2 years of supervisory experience in the hospitality industry, strongly preferred.
• Proven leadership skills with the ability to set vision, motivate teams, and drive accountability.
• Strong sense of professionalism, follow-through, and personal responsibility.
• Demonstrated ability to create an inclusive and collaborative team environment.
• Commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences with warmth and integrity.
• Excellent communication skills with employees, customers, and cross-functional partners.
• Strong attention to detail and operational excellence.
• Ability to coach, mentor, and develop employees at all levels.
• Receptive to feedback with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain composure under pressure.
• Familiarity with café or food & beverage operations preferred; willingness to continuously build product knowledge.
Physical Demands
• Ability to stand and move throughout the café for the duration of scheduled shifts.
• Ability to perform repetitive hand, wrist, and forearm motions (such as operating espresso equipment, preparing beverages, and cleaning tasks).
• Ability to taste and smell products as part of quality assurance and training.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with customers, team members, and leadership.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.
