1.The BIOPOLIS Association opens an international selection procedure for the hiring of one (1) Coordinating Researcher to carry out research activities under an indefinite-term employment contract for an expected period of 12 months, which may be extended, under the project ref. UID/50027/2025 financed by FCT/MCTES. This notice is for one (1) position (Reference BIOPOLIS 2026-03) for the exercise of research activities with the following objectives:
a) To lead high-level research on the recent history and evolution of the population genetics of human settlement, dispersal, and admixture in Southern Africa;
b) To develop a multidisciplinary approach, including complementary approaches offered by linguistics, cultural anthropology, and related topics within the general framework of human population genetics;
c) To understand and unravel the complex dynamics of human settlement and colonization in the riparian region of the Okavango Basin;
d) To support the creation of a TwinLab in Botswana with local colleagues, especially at the Okavango Research Institute (ORI), as well as to develop a scientific agenda and partnership;
e) To support the development of pre-existing TwinLabs in Angola and Namibia, with a special emphasis on developing and strengthening capacities in the fields of genetics, genomics, linguistics, and anthropology in general. The work will be developed in collaboration with other projects and research groups at BIOPOLIS, as well as other national and international initiatives related to this theme, in line with the main objectives of the BIOPOLIS Centre of Excellence.
2.The Labour Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009, of February 12, in its current version, and other applicable legislation for fixed-term employment contracts, shall apply.
3.The selection committee has the following composition:
Prof. Nuno Ferrand (Director of the BIOPOLIS
Association, President of the Jury);
Dr. Pedro Beja (Deputy Director of the BIOPOLIS Association,member); and
Prof. Paulo Célio Alves (Researcher at the BIOPOLIS Association, member).
4.The workplace is located at the BIOPOLIS Association/CIBIO – Vairão Campus, and will frequently involve travel for fieldwork in northern Portugal or abroad, in the service or representation of the employer.
5.The contract will have an expected duration of 12 months, and may be renewable.
6.Remuneration: The gross monthly salary is € 5,009.55, corresponding to index 285 of the Scientific Research Career (Annex I of Decree-Law No. 124/99, of April 20).
7.This call is open to national, foreign, and stateless candidates who are:
a) Holders of a doctoral degree (PhD) in Human Genetics, Molecular Anthropology, or related fields;
b) Holders of extensive professional experience (more than 20 years) in human evolutionary genetics, including the genetics and genomics of global human populations, preferably with a consistent multidisciplinary approach encompassing linguistics, cultural anthropology, and related areas;
c) Holders of extensive professional experience (more than 10 years) in leading fieldwork in Africa, with a special focus on Southern African countries;
d) Holders of proven experience of collaboration with different institutions in Southern African countries;
e) Holders of a solid, proven track record of high-level scientific publications, including in top multidisciplinary journals.
8.The general admission requirements are those defined in the previous point (point 7), with the following special requirements:
•Peer recognition, both nationally and internationally;
•Experience in leading national and international research projects and programs in Africa;
•Availability to travel and undertake long stays in Southern African countries, specifically in Botswana;
•Ability to prepare scientific proposals to secure funds from various funding agencies that support research programs in Africa;
•Demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication and presentation skills; and,
•Fluency in English and Portuguese.
9.The selection will be carried out through the evaluation of the scientific and curricular path of the candidates.
10.The evaluation of the scientific and curricular path focuses on its relevance, quality, and timeliness:
a) Of the scientific, technological, cultural, or artistic production of the last five years considered most relevant by the candidate;
b) Of the applied or practice-based research activities developed in the last five years and considered of greatest impact by the candidate;
c) Of the extension and knowledge dissemination activities developed in the last five years, namely in the context of promoting scientific culture and practices, considered of greatest relevance by the candidate;
d) Of the management activities of science, technology, and innovation programs, or experience in the observation and monitoring of the scientific and technological system or higher education, in Portugal or abroad.
11.The evaluation criteria are as follows:
11.1. Integrated evaluation of the candidate's trajectory and curricular merit:
I. Diversity and quality of scientific indicators, including authorship of publications and technical reports in scientific areas relevant to the project – 20%
II. Participation in long-term projects in the area of human genetics – 30%
11.2. Relevant experience in:
I. Coordination and leadership of fieldwork in human evolutionary genetics in Southern Africa, including logistical planning, collection of biological samples, interaction with local communities, and the ethical and legal framework of the research – 30%
II. Analysis and interpretation of genetic and genomic data of human populations, including inference of demographic history, population structure, migrations, and adaptation, integrating multidisciplinary approaches (anthropology, linguistics, culture) – 20%
12.The final classification system for the candidates is expressed on a scale of 0 to 100.
Final Score = (C1*0.20) + (C2*0.30) + (C3*0.30) + (C4*0.20)
C1 = Scientific indicators (Point 11.1 - I)
C2 = Participation in projects (Point 11.1 - II)
C3 = Field prospection work (Point 11.2 - I)

13.The jury will deliberate through a nominal, reasoned vote in accordance with the adopted and disclosed selection criteria, and abstentions are not permitted.
14.Minutes will be taken of the jury's meetings, which shall contain a summary of what occurred, as well as the votes cast by each member and their respective reasoning, and will be provided to the candidates upon request.
15.After completing the application of the selection criteria, the jury will proceed to draw up the ordered list of approved candidates with their respective classification.
16.The final deliberation of the jury is homologated by the highest authority of the institution, who is also responsible for deciding on the hiring.
17.Application Formalization:
17.1. Applications are formalized by submitting a request to the electronic address https://www.cibio.up.pt/en/jobs, with the following documents in digital format, preferably in PDF:
i ) Personal statement (up to two A4 pages), detailing the candidate's vision for BIOPOLIS and the role of Human Evolutionary Genetics in achieving its ambitious short, medium, and long-term objectives. The statement should also describe how their past achievements and experience provide excellent qualifications for the position.
ii) Curriculum vitae (up to six A4 pages), which proves that the candidate meets the requirements of the call.
iii) Academic degree certificate.
17.2. The application period runs from January 20, 2026, to February 2, 2026. The expected start date of the contract is March 1, 2026.
18.Candidates who incorrectly formalize their application or who do not prove the requirements demanded in this call will be excluded from admission. The jury has the right to require any candidate, in case of doubt, to present supporting documents for their statements.
19.False statements made by candidates will be punished according to the law.
20.Admitted and excluded candidates will be notified by email.
21.After notification of the provisional ranking list, candidates have 10 working days to express their views, in a hearing of interested parties, to the email [email protected]. The final decisions of the jury will be issued within a period of up to 90 working days from the deadline for the submission of applications.
