Description
About Take Command
Take Command is a start-up on a mission to improve the healthcare system, starting with health insurance. Pragmatically speaking, we help employers reimburse employees for individual insurance instead of offering a traditional one-size-fits-all group plan. We believe this model can empower employees (when they have the right support) to be savvy healthcare consumers and have a transformative impact on the entire healthcare system.
Let’s be honest—health insurance is usually a confusing, frustrating, and even emotional experience for people. We want to fix that with a new model, great technology, and a superior user experience. We have made a great start, but we need your help to fully realize our long-term vision. About the Role
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can independently build meaningful product and platform capabilities across Take Command. You’ll be assigned to one of our product squads based on company needs, your experience, and your interests. Our squads work across areas like insurance shopping, benefits administration, money movement, reimbursement workflows, operational tools, and the platform services behind them.
This is a backend-leaning full-stack role. Technologies used include Java, Postgres, AWS, React, and TypeScript. Our backend is primarily Java today, and we value engineers who can help us evolve the stack thoughtfully over time.
As a senior individual contributor, you’ll be expected to own meaningful work end to end, make strong technical decisions, and contribute to product and technical direction within your team.
What You’ll Do
Design, build, and maintain product and platform capabilities within your squad, including services, APIs, data models, and integrations
Write technical designs and contribute to design discussions for meaningful product and platform changes
Build frontend experiences in partnership with product and design
Work with product managers, designers, and engineers to turn ambiguous problems into practical solutions
Improve existing systems as you work, including code, tests, documentation, and operational patterns
What We’re Looking For
Strong experience building production software in a backend-leaning full-stack role, ideally with Java or a similar language
Experience with relational databases, especially data modeling for real product systems
Experience working with distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, or microservices
Ability to take ownership of a problem, clarify ambiguity, and drive implementation
Good product judgment and an interest in how your work affects customers, internal users, operations, and the business
Pragmatic technical judgment about when to keep things simple, when to invest more deeply, and how to make tradeoffs
Clear communication and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, design, and business partners
Compensation
$140,000 - $195,000 + 10%
We believe employees should be compensated fairly based on the market in which they live and work. Using geographic market data helps us maintain competitive pay, support internal equity, and ensure a consistent approach to compensation decisions across the company.
