Description
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected. Position Overview We are seeking a Model Based Engineer who will be responsible for authoring and maintaining the 3D digital definitions of composite satellite structures within CAD platforms — defining ply shapes, sequencing, drop-off profiles, and core materials. The role owns the model-based workflow end to end: simulating how fabrics conform to complex molds to catch manufacturing issues before parts are built, generating flat patterns and factory-floor outputs (laser projection, automated cutting, and AFP paths), producing ply books and cross-section documentation for repeatability, and integrating designs with PLM systems such as Siemens Teamcenter to manage engineering changes and maintain traceability across teams. The successful candidate will be innovative, creative, and challenge the status quo. They will work well in teams while also having the ability to lead a small team and to work assignments autonomously. Key Responsibilities: Authoring 3D composite definitions, defining ply shapes, ply sequence orders, drop-off profiles, and core materials inside CAD platforms Simulating how fabrics conform to complex molds. They identify manufacturing issues—such as fiber deviation, wrinkling, or bridging—before any physical part is built Generating flat patterns that account for material deformation. They export critical data directly to the factory floor, including laser projection files, automated cutting sequences, and automated fiber placement (AFP) paths Creating accurate cross-sections, core samples, and automated "Ply Books" (layup documentation) to ensure repeatability and part quality for technicians Integrating designs with systems (like Siemens Teamcenter) to manage engineering changes, maintain traceability, and ensure all teams access the latest digital definitions Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering / Aerospace Engineering Experience: Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design and composite structures design Strong technical skill in design of composite structure and design for manufacturability. CAD program experience required (NX, Fibersim) Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team with other engineers.  Flexibility/adaptability in a fast-paced & dynamic environment. Excellent English written and verbal communication skills Preferred Qualifications: Experience in aerospace / space composite structural design Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills Proven ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Meticulous attention to detail to ensure the accuracy of all documentation and project deliverables. Technology Stack: CAD Tools (NX, Fibersim) Microsoft Office Tools Physical Requirements Ability to travel 20% of the time Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays)   This job description may not be inclusive to the duties and responsibilities listed. Additional tasks may be assigned to the employee from time to time or the scope of the job may change as needed by business demands .   AST SpaceMobile is an Equal Opportunity, at will Employer; employment is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity
