Description
The Role The Mechanical Design Engineer will be a member of the hardware team responsible for the mechanical design of our Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems. Tasks will include designing custom 19-inch rack-mounted enclosures (sheet metal), the internal mechanical parts that carry our boards and optics, and housings for internal modules. You will take designs from concept through 3D CAD, design-for-manufacture, prototyping, fabrication, and integration, working hands-on with sheet-metal and CNC suppliers. We currently use Fusion 360 but are open to your preferred tool. The Responsibilities The Mechanical Design Engineer should expect to work in the following activities. Enclosure and mechanical design Designing custom 19-inch rack-mounted enclosures: folded sheet-metal parts with correct bend allowances and DFM, front and back panels, and rack mounting Designing internal mechanical parts - mounting trays, brackets, and mounts for boards and subsystems CNC-machined parts Designing CNC-milled housings and parts for internal optical and electronic modules Manufacturing and prototyping Producing complete manufacturing drawing packages and BOMs; selecting and managing sheet-metal and CNC suppliers, and potentially working with external design houses and ODMs Driving prototype builds, fit-checks, and design iterations through to production readiness Implementing cross-discipline requirements Supporting EMC and compliance through sound mechanical design (gasketing and grounding/bonding provisions) and pre-compliance, together with the electronics team and external test labs Collaboration and documentation Collaborating with optics, electronics, FPGA, and software teams on mechanical interfaces, envelopes, and mounting Authoring drawings, tolerance analyses, and change logs; maintaining records The Requirements The Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to have the following qualifications and experience. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with proven experience designing mechanical hardware and enclosures for instrumentation or telecom/datacenter products (typically 3+ years) Sheet-metal design (folded/bent parts, bend allowances, DFM) and CNC-machined part design (DFM for milling, fits, tolerances, finishes) Hands-on experience designing 19-inch rackmount enclosures A hands-on prototyping mindset and the ability to collaborate across optics, electronics, and systems engineering Proficiency in written and spoken English Ability to be on-site in our Munich or Potsdam offices to work with hardware, when required Applicants must have the right to work in Germany at the time of application. We do not provide visa sponsorship. Must be eligible to obtain and maintain either (a) a U.S. Secret (or higher) security clearance or (b) an EU SECRET (or national equivalent) personnel security clearance. Employment is contingent on meeting applicable government security requirements; eligibility is determined by the competent authorities. Good to have: Experience with tamper-resistant, secure, or defense-grade enclosures Industrial-design sensibility and premium product finishing (anodizing, custom front panels) Awareness of EMC/EMI gasketing and shielding The Rewards   We are an international team of quantum technology experts and dedicated business creatives that are working to bring quantum-enabled solutions to the global market. Our brilliant team members enjoy a high degree of freedom working remotely or joining one of our office spaces. We have a vibrant, enthusiastic, passionate and creative culture driven by trust, excellence and continuous improvement. If you join the Terra Quantum team, you can expect:   An opportunity to work with some of the brightest minds in the pioneering field of Quantum Technologies as well as an experienced and progressive Leadership team Gain knowled
