Description
Focused Energy is building the future of clean energy through laser-driven inertial fusion. Backed by our $240M Series A — the largest fully secured Series A in the global fusion industry — we are scaling rapidly across multiple geographies. Based in Germany and the US, we have brought together the top scientific and engineering minds using proven technologies to unlock fusion power at commercial scale. Focused Energy is working to realize game-changing scientific innovation that promises to deliver a clean, sustainable and abundant source of power globally. YOUR ROLE Focused Energy's Power Amplifier development depends on laser systems that are built, aligned, and maintained to exacting standards. As our Laser Technician, you’ll be performing hands-on technical work, ensuring our laser and optical systems are assembled correctly, perform reliably, and stay in operational condition throughout the R&D cycle. Based onsite at our Darmstadt facility, you'll work alongside laser engineers, optical designers, and electronics specialists as a core member of the Laser team. You'll be a person who keeps the lab running: without this capability in-house, development velocity slows and engineers get pulled away from higher-level design work. You'll perform the hands-on lifecycle of our laser system hardware, from assembly and alignment through testing, maintenance, and documentation. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Perform assembly, alignment, and testing of laser amplifier systems and beam delivery assemblies to specification. - Lead preventive maintenance, calibration, and system upgrades to keep laser infrastructure in operational condition. - Drive fault diagnosis across optical, electro-optical, and basic electronic subsystems, resolving issues or escalating with clear documentation. - Ensure all work with high-energy lasers, high-voltage electronics, and controlled lab environments meets applicable safety standards. - Build and wire laser-related electronics, including power supplies, drivers, and control subsystems. - Improve system documentation — configurations, test results, and procedures — so engineers and future technicians can rely on it. - Partner with laser engineers and scientists to support development, integration, and troubleshooting across the R&D program. - Enable rapid development cycles by maintaining lab readiness and responding quickly when systems need attention. WHO YOU ARE - Solid background in photonics, laser technology, or optical systems, with hands-on experience in precision optical alignment. - Working knowledge of electro-optical and basic electronic systems, including building and wiring power supplies, drivers, and control subsystems. - Comfortable with structured fault diagnosis and preventive maintenance planning across optical, electro-optical, and electronic subsystems. - Experience with optical and electrical test equipment such as power meters, oscilloscopes, and spectrum or laser beam analysers. - Familiarity with laser safety principles, including Class 4/high-energy laser systems, high-voltage safety protocols, and cleanroom or controlled-environment standards. - Strong technical documentation habits — clear, structured, and kept current. - A self-directed owner who follows tasks through to completion, flags blockers and safety concerns early, and knows when to escalate a cross-disciplinary or novel issue. - Comfortable working closely with engineers and scientists day-to-day and adapting to shifting priorities as the R&D program evolves. WHAT WE OFFER - Innovative Technology & Mission: Be part of a cutting-edge company working on groundbreaking research in clean energy and scientific discovery. - Career Development: We invest in our people. This is an opportunity to join an early, growing company at the forefront of new technology, where you'll have the opportunity to develop and grow your career. - Collaborative Culture: Work with great people
