WHY THIS ROLE As a small team, we all wear many hats and enjoy tackling new challenges. We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager who thrives in a hands-on environment who’ll shape the direction of the engineering organization and how we operate as we scale. We don't expect you to have a background in everything we use, but we do expect strong technical skills, exceptional communication, and a track record of leading high-performing engineering teams through ambiguity and scale. We're looking for builders who still know how to code even if it's not part of the day-to-day. This role reports to the Head of Product & Engineering. It is a hybrid role with expectations that you are working from our Boston, MA office at least 2 days per week if hired. We are only considering candidates in the greater Boston area at this time. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Leading and developing a fast-paced engineering team, providing clear direction, feedback, mentorship, and coaching - Owning planning and execution across projects while helping engineers stay unblocked, focused, and aligned - Defining and evolving our hiring process, standards, and team structure as we grow - Building the processes, expectations, and culture that will support CivilGrid's next phase of growth - Our tech stack: - React, React Native, Tailwind - Bun.sh http://Bun.sh servers deployed on AWS ECS, Postgres on RDS - ESRI and Mapbox for mapping - Proprietary mapping data service built for speed and customizability - GitHub, Slack, Notion, Figma WHAT YOU'LL BRING - 6+ years of experience in software engineering - You’re hands on and have a minimum of 3 years experience in engineering management - Proven track record of growing and managing high-performing engineering teams - Comfortable in a greenfield environment and excited to shape, design, and stand up new systems - Strong communication skills - verbal and written - Have a few war stories to share on running high scale production systems - BS/MS in Computer Science or similar BONUS POINTS - Strong preference for candidates who have managed senior and staff level engineers - Prior startup or founder experience HOW WE WORK We're a small, but rapidly growing team that ships. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS The base salary range for this role is $173,806 - $236,250. Base salary is only one part of your total compensation package at CivilGrid, which also includes meaningful early-stage equity, comprehensive benefits, and t
