Description
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The DSP plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life of individuals by fostering independence, ensuring their safety, and promoting community integration. This role requires compassion, patience, and a commitment to helping individuals live their best lives. Key Responsibilities: Personal Care: Assist individuals with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. Skill Development: Support individuals in developing and enhancing their life skills, including personal hygiene, cooking, money management, and social skills. Community Engagement: Accompany individuals on outings to the community, encouraging social participation and engagement in recreational activities. Health and Safety: Administer medications as directed, monitor health conditions, and provide emergency assistance if necessary. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of the individual’s progress, activities, and health status. Complete required documentation in compliance with regulatory standards. Behavioral Support: Implement individualized care plans and behavior support plans, promoting positive behaviors and managing challenging behaviors when necessary. Advocacy: Advocate for the rights, needs, and preferences of individuals in all aspects of care. Transportation: Provide or arrange transportation to appointments, social events, and other outings as required. Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in related fields (e.g., CPR, First Aid, Medication Administration) is preferred. Experience: Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in a caregiving role is a plus. Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Problem-solving skills and ability to manage challenging behaviors. Basic computer and documentation skills. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and support individuals, stand or walk for extended periods, and perform physical tasks related to personal care.
