Description
Some of the most valuable tech work doesn’t happen in the spotlight. It happens in the engine room, ensuring that the foundation of an entire platform is rock-solid. At Visma e-conomic, we’re looking for a Database Administrator to join our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team. You’ll be a guardian of our data landscape, ensuring that if our main database stays up, our whole platform stays up with it. With over 280,000 customers depending on our services, you’ll have the opportunity to ensure peak performance, scalability, and reliability. If you’re driven by solving complex challenges in a cutting-edge environment and want to make a significant impact in a rapidly growing company, we want you on our team. Pretty exciting role, if you ask us, but have a sneak peek yourself! ✌️ The SRE & DBA space At e-conomic, our database infrastructure is centered around a Microsoft SQL Server 2022 cluster running on Windows, hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and set up for high availability and resilience with regular backups. This instance is the focal point of our operations, supporting our SaaS platform. In addition, we maintain SQL Servers for various test environments, along with PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases for production use, which are being increasingly adopted as we transition from a monolithic setup to a microservices architecture. This diverse database environment offers a dynamic and challenging landscape for our DBA, who is embedded in our Site Reliability Engineering team. The Role As a DBA on the SRE team, you are responsible for the reliability and scalability of our business-critical database infrastructure. You’ll work alongside our Senior DBA to move from a pure "executor" to an "improver". You don’t just run scripts but pitch and plan technical optimizations. From day one, you’ll be mentored to take full ownership of database performance. Your Responsibilities Operational Excellence: Manage day-to-day administrative tasks, handle instance failures, and manage all data backup/recovery procedures. Performance Engineering: Take ownership of partitioning large datasets, query tuning, and identifying unused indexes to keep the platform fast, among other performance tuning operations. Automation & Patching: Use Scripts and Terraform to automate database workflows and handle quarterly SQL Service patching (rotating production machines with the latest images). Developer Consultancy: Support product teams in choosing the right database (SQL, Mongo, or Postgres) and assist with debugging, performance tuning or test environment access. Process Modernization: Improve our "scrambling" processes to allow our developers to test their changes in testing environments and modernize legacy automation and documentation. Proactive Monitoring: Enhance observability (Datadog) to catch hiccups before they reach the customer. Your experience This role is a mid level role with a couple of years of experience (2 to 3 years) in Database Administration OR Software Development with a solid relational database experience. Technical skills: You have a solid grasp of Microsoft SQL Server, including index tuning, query optimization, and troubleshooting database bottlenecks. Familiarity with Cloud environments and GitHub (or any other Git solution). Familiarity with PostgreSQL or MongoDB are welcomed. Familiarity with Observability tools (Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, New Relic). Knowledge of PowerShell, Windows, or a programming language (Python, C#) for scripting is a major plus. SRE Curiosity: An interest in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and SRE best practices like a mindset to reduce toil through automation is a plus. Builder Mindset: You are proactive, organized (Kanban), and know when to work independently versus when to reach out for help. Communication: Good async communication skill
