With more ocean miles and real-world operational experience than any USV manufacturer or operator, Saildrone maintains active, combat-deployed systems supporting national security and force projection around the world, 24/7/365.  Saildrone’s manufacturing and R&D headquarters are located in Alameda, CA, with business development and sales operations in Washington, DC, and deployment hubs in Europe and the Middle East. By combining proven autonomous operations, edge computing, advanced sensing, renewable power, and the most advanced and robust unmanned surface technology on the planet, Saildrone is shaping how the Navy of the future operates. Join a fast-moving, mission-driven team at the forefront of maritime security and autonomous innovation. THE POSITION Saildrone is seeking a Composites Technician to join our Production. Reporting to the Composites Manufacturing Lead, you will play a critical role in building high-performance composite structures for Saildrone’s uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs). You will help translate engineering designs into reliable, production-ready hardware that meets quality, safety, and performance standards. We are looking for a skilled manufacturing professional who takes pride in craftsmanship, executes with precision, and thrives in a fast-paced production environment. THE TEAM The Composites team is responsible for designing, building, and continuously improving Saildrone’s autonomous maritime platforms. We focus on delivering durable, scalable composite structures that enable reliable global operations across defense, security, and commercial missions. Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams, this group ensures that composite components meet demanding operational requirements in harsh maritime environments. THE RESPONSIBILITIES Composite Fabrication: Manufacture high-performance composite parts using prepreg, infusion, and wet/vacuum bag lamination to achieve design specifications and production targets. Technical Interpretation: Interpret and execute against engineering drawings and ply books, ensuring all components meet strict dimensional and structural requirements. Chemical & Material Handling: Be accountable for the precise mixing and application of epoxy resins, fairing compounds, and industrial coatings, maintaining the highest standards for chemical safety and material traceability. Tooling & Mold Support: Carry out moldmaking and toolmaking activities to support R&D prototypes, including the use of CNC ply cutters and specialized shop equipment. Quality Inspection & Rework: Monitor for laminating defects (voids, delamination, bridging), taking action to rework and fair surfaces to ensure adherence to cosmetic and structural quality standards. Rigging & Shop Operations: Work closely with the Production Lead to manage heavy material moves, including rigging and lifting operations for large-scale hull and wing components. Workplace Discipline (5S): Adhere to established SOPs and safety protocols while maintaining an organized, clean-room environment to prevent material contamination. THE QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent. 1+ years of experience in composites manufacturing, boatbuilding, aerospace, automotive, or related industries. Hands-on experience with prepreg, infusion, and wet/vacuum bag lamination techniques. Proficiency in mixing and applying epoxy resins, fairing compounds, and industrial coatings. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions. Comfortable working independently or as part of a team in a production environment. Proficiency with hand and power tools used in composite fabrication. Ability to work in physically demanding environments and safely use required PPE.
